goodreads:
Yara Jones doesn’t believe in sea monsters—until she becomes one.
When a hurricane hits her island home and she wakes up with fins, Yara finds herself tangled up in an underwater world of mysterious merfolk and secretive selkies. Both sides believe Yara can save them by fulfilling a broken promise and opening the sealed gateway to their realm, but they are battling over how it should be done. The selkies want to take her life. The merfolk want something far more precious.
Treygan, the stormy-eyed merman who turned Yara mer, will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to protect his people—until he falls for Yara. The tides turn as Yara fights to save herself, hundreds of sea creatures, and the merman who has her heart. She could lose her soul in the process—or she might open the gateway to a love that’s deeper than the oceans.
Young Adult fans of Mermaids, Selkies, Sirens and Gorgons will love this tale of the sacrifice one makes for genuine love. Love that could be lost at any moment to the ever-changing tides.

My Take:
One night an unforeseen hurricane takes aim on the island where Yara lives with her Uncle. While trying to board up her home, an unexpected visitor takes her away. Waking up underwater with fins, Yara is confused and scared; remembering the stories her boyfriend Rownan has told her about merfolk. Soon secrets surface about a past that dates back all the way to Poseiden and Medusa, and how Yara is the future for opening a gateway that has been closed off for many years. Yara learns that Rownan is actually a Selkie, and her kidnapper, the mysterious merman Treygan, is her guardian. She now must figure out who she can trust and who she must help to break a curse to open the gateway. But with a growing attaraction between her and Treygan, it may all prove too costly.

I don’t believe I have ever read a story about mermaids before but once I read the summary of Tangled Tides, I knew I had to read it. Thankful for the chance to review the book, I dove in and was hooked just pages into the story. Every bit of the storyline consumed me and I would read until I could no longer hold my eyes open. I immediately fell for Treygan, loving him from the start. Rownan...not so much. There was just something about him that seemed off from the start, not allowing me to root for him. And soon you find out what it is. But each character was brilliantly written and I enjoyed every moment with them hearing their story.

Tangled Tides is an amazing story of love and sacrifice, not just for Yara, but the other characters as well. Karen Amanda Hooper knows how to spin a tale that is not only entertaining but intriguing as well. She keeps you guessing throughout the book with the right amount of suspense and anticipation. Hooper's mermaids are fast becoming my favorite, even more than my love for faeries. This is most definitely a must read and I look forward to more stories from this author.
In fact, I am craving them!

  4. Great review! I just finished this one myself and loved it.I immediately loved Treygan as well and I really wanted to hate Rownan but I couldn't. I have been looking for a good mermaid story for months and this was definitely the one. But now I am on a bit of a mermaid kick and dying to read more.
