goodreads...
In my debut novel, Breathe, Sadie may have fallen in love with the teen rock star, Jax Stone, but readers fell head over heels for Marcus Hardy. This is his story…
Marcus Hardy had hoped to enjoy a year away at college while he put the summer he’d rather forget behind him. But instead, he’s jerked right back to the coastal town of Sea Breeze, Alabama due to a family crisis. His dear ol' dad found himself a girlfriend only a few years older than Marcus. So now his sister needs help dealing with their mother who is mentally falling apart. The only bright spot to returning is the fascinating red head who sleeps over several times a week. The problem is she's sleeping in bed with his new roommate, Cage Watson.
Willow “Low” Foster needs a place to live. Running to Cage’s apartment every time her sister kicks her out isn’t exactly a long term solution. Juggling her courses at the local community college and a part time job doesn’t produce excess income. But Cage has a new roommate and suddenly sleeping over at her best friend’s apartment isn’t such a bad thing. Not when she gets to see those sexy green eyes of Marcus Hardy’s twinkle when he smiles at her like he wants her there.
Even though Cage seems a little territorial where Low is concerned, Marcus finds time to spend with Low without upsetting his roommate. Cage may use his small college baseball star persona to sleep with every hot female in his path but he’s still under the disillusion that when he’s through sowing his wild oats, he’s going to marry Low. Marcus intends to change that assumption for both Cage and Low. Until his carefully laid plans come crashing down with a revelation he never expected. He’ll have to choose between Low or his family. Because once the truth comes out.... there’s no other choice.
My take...
So you get the whole concept after reading the summary right? Willow meets Marcus…who I am sure all of us loved in Breathe. In fact I felt so bad for him when Sadie chose Jax. He was too sweet and too nice. He needs a good girl to be with. And I love that Willow is just the girl he needs. So they meet and there is an instant attraction between the two. Things start to heat up and the relationship starts to grow. But both have family issues and baggage that neither want to divulge; and those issues will play a huge role in their relationship.
Another obstacle in this newly developing relationship is Low’s bond with Cage. Even though Cage claims he will marry Low one day, Low only thinks of him as family. So telling Cage about this growing attraction to Marcus could cost her their friendship, something that Low doesn’t want to lose.
When it comes to contemporary fiction…I like it to a certain degree. I prefer some paranormal or supernatural elements to my stories. But Glines is so real in her writing that I could read her contemporary stuff all day, every day. I wouldn’t exactly call Because of Low strictly YA due to some situations in the story, so the story is probably best for the more mature YA reader.
Like I said earlier, I loved Marcus in Breathe and felt so bad for him when he lost Sadie to Jax. Don’t get me wrong…Jax and Sadie are perfect for each other. But Marcus is an absolute doll in Because of Low, even if I did want to slap him upside his head a few times. And I just adored Low. She has problems with trusting people easily and feels as if she is not good enough for others. I am sure a lot of people are that way, so I believe many will be able to relate to her.
One thing I wasn’t crazy with was the ending. I felt it needed a little more, kinda like it ended too abruptly. But Because of Low most definitely is one of my most fav reads of 2012. Abbi Glines has yet to write a book that disappointed me. In fact her work seems to be getting better as she goes. Thank you Glines for writing a book that caught my attention before I even read it,had me falling in love with it from the start, and left me longing for more at the end.

Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI love how the characters are all complicated, with family issues and difficult pasts. But I think, like you said, this is what makes the characters come to life. The fact that Cage makes things complicated makes things interesting!
How unique that they find each other while sharing an apartment!
