goodreads...
Eviana Dumahl has returned home as a clan leader, an orphan, and a heartbroken teenage girl. Her parents are dead and her boyfriend, Brendan, has decided that he needs some time away. While battling her inner turmoil, Eviana is forced into the war that Lucian Sutherland has incited amongst her own kind. With the help of Kain, her friend and formally betrothed, the two work together to prove that they deserve their birthrights as young merfolk leaders.
When the Council requests a demonstration of Eviana’s mermaid powers, she finds herself with an opportunity to win back Brendan’s heart. But her orders to train with a repulsive merman and the presence of an attractive new suitor challenges Eviana to embrace her leadership and resist temptation. Lucian is after her, and no one seems to understand why. Loyalties are tested as the casualties increase, showing Eviana that sometimes it is impossible to delineate between friends and enemies.
Betrayal is the second book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends as they navigate through the challenges of existing in a secret world.
If you have not read Promises...it's probably best to not read my review, due to spoilers of the first book.
My take...
In the short time since Promises left off, Eviana has had to grow up quick after losing her parents and her boyfriend. Eviana and Kain may be back on speaking terms; at least enough to lead their clans, but their relationship is nowhere near where it once was. She still has feelings for Brendan, her selkie ex-boyfriend, but what was up with that almost kiss with her and Kain? And now let’s add another hunky merman to the mix that is also vying for Eviana’s affection. What’s a girl to do?
Well thanks to Lucian, Eviana doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to sorting out her guy problems. Lucian is hell bent on destroying clans until he has full control over all the merfolk and selkies and war is on the horizon. So now Eviana and all the clans are preparing for a battle that they just might lose.
When I finished Promises I was all ‘Whoo Team Kain’ but now after being introduced to debonair Graham, my heart tried making a u turn. But it’s still holding firm with Kain. Ok Amber…why are you bringing in another hottie for us to gush over? As if 2 weren’t enough, let’s throw another one in. And sure I like Brendan and glad he is back in the picture, blah blah blah, but I love me some Kain and even after all that happens (wink wink) I still like Graham. How can I explain Graham? Well you know bad boy Adrain from Vampire Academy? Yeah that’s sorta what Graham is like. Nom Nom on a stick, or fin really.
Amber's writing swept me up from the get go in Betrayal. I loved every second in her world of mermaids and was so glad to be back in it. Know what else I loved…where she is taking the story. Lots of action, fighting and ‘betrayal’ happen in this one and I am certain much more is to come in book 3. Do you like cliffhangers? Yeah Betrayal ends in a whopper of one. Good grief I am giddy with how it all ended. Well played Amber, well played! So with the end of this review there is only one question that remains, well 2….WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK and WHEN CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT??
