goodreads...
The first story in the new paranormal series by Elizabeth Hunter, acclaimed author of the Elemental Mysteries.

Welcome to Cambio Springs.

In this small desert town, secrets bubble up from the desert floor, and history is written on the canyon walls. Seven friends will gather at the crossroads, because in Cambio Springs, everything—and everyone—changes.

Jena Crowe escaped the Springs ten years ago. Now, she’s heading home with two boys to start a new life. With her husband’s ghost keeping her company on the road, Jena will learn that moving back and moving backward aren’t necessarily the same thing, and sometimes the places you try to escape are exactly where you need to fall.

Three nights to say goodbye. Three days to come to grips with the future. For Jena and her two sons, it’s going to be a long ride home.

Long Ride Home is a short story of approximately twenty-five pages.

My take...
Jena just lost her husband, her very best friend, to brain cancer. Now she has packed up her 2 young sons and is moving them back home. Back home to where their family and friends are; to give them a chance to grow up somewhere safe and surrounded by those that love them. Before they get there it's going to take 3 days and 3nights to make the trip. And it's on that long ride home that Jena will have to come to terms with the death of her husband and say goodbye to him. Jena will have to face the fear of returning home to an unknown future for her and her boys. Fortunately she has her husband's ghost to keep her company and help her through the trip. Unfortunately there are some things she must face head on by herself...like the guilt of actually wanting to return home.

I have never had a short story affect me the way that this one has. Elizabeth, have I told you lately I love your writing...your way of bringing emotions to life? Just a few pages in and there were tears. Tears I tell you!! Just a few pages in and I already want more. Just a few pages in and I already love Jena. And what is up with that ending? To think that I had the whole paranormal part figured out with her being able to see her husband's ghost. Yeah, I was way off. I need more of this story...more of Elizabeth's story telling…just more!

Long Ride Home is a quick read that gives us a little intro in Elizabeth's new paranormal series that will be coming out next spring. In this quick read you will get acquainted with Jena as she is given a rare opportunity to say good bye to her husband...even though he has already passed. Long Ride Home whet's your appetite for what is bound to be another fabulous story by Elizabeth Hunter.
