NEW ADULT READ

goodreads...
"Mom always told me there are two kinds of love in this world: the steady breeze, and the hurricane. Emerson Ray was my hurricane...."

Juliet McKenzie was an innocent eighteen-year old when she spent the summer in Cedar Cove—and fell head over heels in love with Emerson. Complicated, intense Emerson, the local bad boy. His blue eyes hid dark secrets, and just one touch could set Juliet ablaze. Their love was demanding and all-consuming, but when summer ended, tragedy tore them apart. Juliet swore she’d never go back, and she’s kept that promise… Until now.

Four years later, Juliet’s done her best to rebuild the wreckage of her shattered life. She’s got a great boyfriend, and a steady job planned after she graduates. Returning to Cedar Cove to pack up her family’s beach house to prepare it for sale, Juliet is determined that nothing will stand in the way of her future. But one look from Emerson, and all her old desire comes flooding back. He let her go once, but this time, he’s not giving up without a fight. And Emerson fights dirty.

A heartbreaking history. An unstoppable passion. Torn between her past and future, Juliet struggles to separate love from desire. But will they find a way to overcome their tragic secrets—together? And after so much damage has been done, can a love remain unbroken?

My take...
He was the one who took our love and tore it in two, like I was nothing to him. Like those hot, fierce summer nights and all his whispered promised had been nothing but a dream.

All Juliet has to do is go back to their family summer home and pack it up to have it ready to sell. That’s it. She can do this. Once this part of her life is packed neatly away she can go back to her loving boyfriend, finish college, and move on leaving the past in the past. Piece of cake right? Well she thought it would be until she comes face to face with him. The mere sight of him brings the memories crashing back down on her as if they haven’t spent the last 4 years apart. But they have both changed since that late summer day 4 years ago. Juliet has moved on and Emerson is, well he is Emerson. The guy that ripped her heart into tiny broken pieces. There is no way she could ever let him back into her life…or will she? And will history end up repeating itself?
This book was hot. It was sad, sweet, and heartbreaking…but again, it was hot! I think after everyone gets done with his book Emerson will be everyone’s hurricane. Lord knows he is mine.
But seriously. This book got me thinking about those summer romances from long ago. There may have been a hurricane or two in my past and this book reminded me of them. Oh they were something else and ended up hurting me in the end. Why do a lot of the great romances happen in the summer? What is it about the summer that makes you feel things you wouldn’t otherwise feel in the winter? Or maybe you do but it just doesn’t seem so monumental at the time. Maybe it is the idea of what summer brings: freedom, newness, love. But thankfully I found my hurricane and married him. ;)
I just adored Emerson. Yes, he definitely has his hang ups and can be a real jerk at times. But it is apparent that he has built a few walls up over the last 4 years. Another thing that is apparent is his feelings for Juliet haven’t waned since she left the small town of Cedar Cove. And the second he sees Juliet back in town those walls start the falter. Every now and then we readers see a trace of what he was like long ago with Juliet. But the minute he realizes that his walls are coming down, he builds them back up. He can’t let the past sneak up on him again…no matter how much he wants Juliet.
Juliet. Oh lord that girl is something else. One look from Emerson and she is putty in his hands. Boyfriend? What boyfriend? But kudos for her seeing that cheating, no matter what you may or may not have done, is cheating. Her friend, Lacey, might need to take a few pointers from her. Because her idea of cheating is so far off it’s no wonder she can’t find a guy. But I felt bad for Juliet throughout most of the book. We see that there is a reason for him leaving her 4 years ago, but we don’t find out until the end. So we have to suffer the heartbreak right along with Juliet the whole book.
The end had me hurting then smiling. Whoa. Too much emotion. Won’t go into much more except that I was pleasantly surprised with how it all went down. I can actually see more books springing to life with some of the other characters and hope that is what the author has planned.
What a wonderful, sexy read that I recommend  to anyone who is crazy over the NEW ADULT genre. It is a quick read that I finished in less than a day. Yes, I inhaled it. I couldn’t put it down. A must read people!

*UPDATE....I just saw there is another book in the series. Not sure who it is based on but I will be reading it. Oh yes, I will be reading it.

There is a scene from the book that made me immediately think of this song....
