Choosing a Book Setting

I’ve always heard you should write what you know and as for book settings, I try to stick to that. Not all of my settings are places I’ve spent time in, but for Tragically Flawed, Beaver Creek is one where I’ve spent plenty. You see, I love to ski. And my favorite place to ski is the Vail/Beaver Creek area, so that’s one of the reasons I chose it as the setting for Tragically Flawed.

My first-hand knowledge of the area helped me with the setting. Riviera needed a place to go where she could spin her magic on the walls of high-end homes, and they are endless in that area. They dot the ski slopes of Beaver Creek. They surround the surreal town of Vail. And they are quite spectacular.

I also needed a place that could set up the background for Shan’s tragic experience as well. As a frequent visitor to that area, I often pondered how the forests would survive the horrific pine beetle infestation that’s taken place there. We’ve experienced it ourselves in my home state, but when you drive through the mountains of the Colorado high country on I-70, the devastation is incredible. Large piles of dead lodgepole pines lay scattered everywhere, and I’ve questioned the safety of that. But the sheer numbers of them make it impossible to do anything about. What I didn’t imagine as I was writing it, was the scene in the book about the terrifying forest fires would actually occur…though not in Eagle County, they happened elsewhere in Colorado this summer. I still shudder when I think about that.

I always choose the setting after the plot is established though. Some writers may be different, but when I begin the story in my head, it goes from there to the outline of the plot, and then the setting is chosen.

So there you have it. Oh, by the way, Shan’s house is located on my one of my favorite ski runs at the Beav. Happy reading!

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M.
