On the heels of
her high school graduation, Ellie Morales is spending her summer vacation in
the mountains of Western North Carolina with her dad and brother, Jonah. Having
lost their mother only months earlier, all of them are trying to cope with the
loss in their own way.
Part routine, part escape, running is Ellie's
way of dealing with her grief. Shortly after sunrise each morning, Ellie and
her dog, Bosco, set out for a lengthy run on the path that passes by her house
and leads deep into the woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains. One fateful morning,
Ellie is lead off of the trail and discovers a secret that will change her
life, as well as the lives of the family she meets, forever. One member of this
mysterious family is Sam Gantry, who seems unlike any guy she's ever known.
This meeting sparks a series of events, causing
Ellie to question everything she's ever known and believed. The more she learns
about Sam and his family, the more she wants to help him find the missing
puzzle pieces.

Fun Facts About The Days Lost:- The town of Mayfield was loosely based on Highlands, North Carolina, a quaint town in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
- David Lynch's Blue Velvet helped inspire the part in the book where Ellie and Sam visit Ernest's house and Roy Orbinson's In Dreams is playing on the car radio.
- I imagined actor Graham Wardle from the show Heartland when I described Sam's looks.
- North Carolina holds the title for having the most snake bites each year, and Ellie, the main character, becomes a part of that statistic.
- There are many references to Little House on the Prairie throughout the book, which was a favorite TV show of mine when I was a kid.
- Jonah was supposed to be a minor character, but he wouldn't shut up.
- Ellie's dog was originally supposed to be called Paco, but I like Bosco, my neighbor's dog, so much that I changed his name.
- Sam's use of a bow and arrow to catch fish was not at all inspired by my unhealthy adoration for Daryl from The Walking Dead. (Wink, wink).
- Ellie was originally a character in another story that I never finished writing, but I liked her so much that I brought her back to life.
- A good portion of the dialogue between Ellie and her brother, Jonah, was influenced by my relationship with my brother.
Ellie has lost her mom not long ago, but it still dealing with the hurt as if it was yesterday. Ellie copes with it the only way she knows how...by taking off running for hours at a time. The family is hurting but no one wants to talk about it. And slowly it is tearing them apart.
As Ellie ventures out on her own during one of her runs, she comes across a family that seems to think they are living in the days of the Civil War. Not sure if she is having a breakdown from all the stress she is under or really happened upon a family lost in time...Ellie finds herself in the middle of a mystery only found in one of her books.
I just loved the idea that McCrimmon has come up with. It is different and fun and before long you are so caught up in the story you feel as if you are really there. That is power of a talented author. They wield words into something amazing, beautiful, and transforming. They spin a story that takes you out of your reality and places you somewhere else entirely. I found this true with McCrimmon’s first series as well. That is talent, folks!
The mystery that surrounds the story was definitely one of the reasons I was so enthralled with the book. It really is interesting and will have you eagerly reading to find out the hows and whys behind it all. And let’s not forget the characters, shall we. They are so endearing and kind. Well a majority of them are. There are a few scoundrels you will have to be on the lookout for.
This story is a must read and perfect for any age reader! Just pick it up and get lost in THE DAYS LOST.
I'm a Florida native who currently resides in
Greenville, South Carolina with my husband and toy poodle. When I'm not
writing, I can be found drinking Earl Grey tea with honey and cream, singing
ineptly and butchering the lyrics to my favorite songs, and asking my friends
ridiculous, hypothetical scenario-based questions.
