Top 5 Things I Need To Write

Hi everyone! Crystal from Jessie Lane here. I’m stopping by I Read Indie today to talk about the five things I NEED before I sit down and start writing. Are you ready for this? You’re going to think I’m the most boring person in the world by the time I’m done, lol. And a huge THANK YOU to Mandy for having me on here today! You’re the best MANDY! Here we go:

1. Peace and quiet. One might think that would be a simple thing to obtain, but in my case not so much. I have two little girls whom I adore, but they’re noisy little stinkers. So I have to make sure that they’re content with their toys/computer/movie/book or whatever the heck it is I’m trying to distract them with before I start. Otherwise I hear “Mom” every five minutes until I give up on writing for the moment.

2. A cup of hot tea. A little while ago I had to give up coffee. Blasphemy, I know. But unfortunately I was having stomach acidicy issues so the coffee had to go. I won’t lie, it was hard as hell. I MISS MY COFFEE! Luckily, I stumbled upon this wonderful substance called Irish Breakfast Tea. It is my new nectar of the gods and I wish I could hook it up to an IV and roll it around with me all day. Now, there’s always a cup in my hand when I sit down at my desk.

3. Post It Notes. I am the Post It Note Queen. I have not one, but TWO, big corkboards dedicated to my push pins and post it notes. Any stray thought or dialogue that isn’t quite right for whatever scene I’m writing at the moment goes on those boards. So, the day that I run out of post it notes, peeps will probably hear me wail in horror across the country. Seriously.

4. Music. I’m inspired by many things in life, but music is by far my biggest inspiration. It’s almost always playing in the background while I’m writing. It’s not just any old Sirius/XM station or Youtube channel though. Oh no, I look for whatever song I feel fits that chapter and I’ll play it on repeat. *rubs hands together in evil glee* I drive my husband nuts doing that. MUAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

5. Whisky. I’m sure some people just did a double take. Or they’re going “Say whaaaat?” Yeah, sometimes if I’m writing at night after my girls go to bed I need whisky. It helps with writer’s blocks, funny scenes or difficult/emotional exhausting scenes. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I have to admit that some of my favorite scenes have been fueled by Jack Daniels and coke. Don’t worry, I always re-read those sections two and three times to make sure I don’t get to crazy.

So, now you know what I need before I start writing. I told you I was insanely boring. I’m sure you all were hoping for something outrageous. For instance a man servant in a loincloth to rub my hands and feet? A massaging desk chair? An endless supply of Mr. Goodbars? Perhaps for aliens to kidnap me and implant a creative genius chip in my brain?

Wait… all of those ideas sounded really good… except for the aliens. Sorry about that, I’ve been reading a lot of Science Fiction Romance lately. Anyways, did anyone have any questions? Maybe ideas of what you might think I should have before I sit down to write?
