Clenching my jaw, I climbed from the cab of the truck and
locked the door. Pocketing the keys, I glanced left and right as I crossed the
street. My shoes scraped softly on the concrete sidewalk.
“Stop. Just wait.” I spoke to no one and yet to myself.
So I did what I said and leaned against the side of the building next door to
the bar. I didn’t know what I was doing, or getting myself into.
Neon lights screamed their agreement that I had picked the
right place to start. I couldn’t go in there like the stupid women in horror
flicks – unprepared and without anyone knowing what was going on.
I swiped my phone and dialed nine-one-one.
A female operator answered.
“I need help. I believe my… whatever, I think my friend
is being held by a killer and I need help.” Oh, I’d bet money the operator was
ready to call an ambulance for me.
“Okay, ma’am. Slow down. Can you tell me where you’re
at?” She spoke calmly, which oddly enough only increased my alarm.
I moved my dry tongue against the roof of my mouth. Come
on, Molly. You’re not crazy. Someone is trying to kill you. You’re not wrong or
imagining things. Demand someone come. “I’m at the bar on Thirty-Second and
Pine. I need help. Please.”
The dispatcher cleared her throat, enunciating each word.
“Ma’am, I understand you’re scared. We already received a call from that
location. We have officers on their way. Can you describe the situation? Where
are the victims now?”
“Victims?” What victims? Who had called? “I don’t know
what you’re talking about.”
