Parker shouldn't be alive. He should have died long before scouts from the Last Holdout rescued him. And he knows better than to believe that sailing away from the safety of the Holdout is a good idea.
Now, without the Holdout to protect them, all of his nightmares are coming true. Josiah is just crazy enough to believe that a fresh start is a good thing. But Parker has lived as prey, hunted by zombies and survivors before--and he knows that no one really survives. In the wild, zombie claimed world outside the walls of safety, there is only the dead walking.

There isn’t any other option. We
can’t get to the beach, not with Park injured and the night full of wildlife we
can’t see, much less kill. I would rather take my chances on a few infected
than that.
And I can tell. The screaming is
too close and familiar to be anything else, but it’s distinct, as it echoes
back and forth across the silent walls of the buildings that time has
abandoned.
There isn’t many. Ten. Maybe
twenty. But between myself, Finn, and Nurrin—we can stand. We can hold them at
bay and put them down. And then, we can make a decision.
“You should run,” our captive
says, and I flick an irritated look at her. I don’t want to listen to her
bullshit—but I don’t think Park would tolerate me gagging her either.
He has a weird sense of what is
right and wrong.
“Shut up,” I say, half-heartedly.
She stares at me, and the screams
rip through the night. And—I jerk around, and she laughs behind me as Finn
peers out the window, cursing low and steady.
Because I can hear what he does.
Undulating war cries that rise and fall between the infected screams.
There’s a fucking herd of infected
out there, and we’re trapped between them and the fucking lions or whatever has
decided to take up in the woods.
And neither of those things are
the problem.
There are humans out there.
And that—that’s the real danger.
Nazarea Andrews (N to almost everyone) is an avid reader and tends to write the stories she wants to read. Which means she writes everything from zombies and dystopia to contemporary love stories. When not writing, she can most often be found driving her kids to practice and burning dinner while she reads, or binging watching TV shows on Netflix. N loves chocolate, wine, and coffee almost as much as she loves books, but not quite as much as she loves her kids. She lives in south Georgia with her husband, daughters, spoiled cat and overgrown dog. She is the author of World Without End series, Neverland Found, Edge of the Falls, and The University of Branton Series.
