5* Review: TRAITOR BORN by Amy A. Bartol

Title: Traitor Born

Author: Amy A Bartol

Source: KU

Goodreads…
In the Fates Republic, Firstborns reign supreme. Secondborns kneel in servitude. Thirdborns face death. And Census shadows them all.

Secondborn Roselle St. Sismode was pressed into military service to battle the rebel uprising threatening the society that enslaves her. Now, powerful factions conspire to subvert the lines of succession, positioning Roselle to replace her mother as leader of the Republic’s armed forces. But the woman who bore her would sooner see Roselle dead than let her usurp her firstborn brother’s command.

The deadly war of intrigue between her new masters and her ruthless family is but one conflict challenging Roselle. A soldier for the rebellion has drawn her into a rogue army’s plot to overthrow the Republic and shatter its brutal caste system. Targeted by assassins and torn between allies, Roselle’s loyalty, love, and honor will be tested in the greatest battle of—and for—her life.

My take…
Maybe I’d be sorry for what I’ve done tonight if my brother hadn’t tried to murder me. I don’t know. My thoughts are chaotic. Savage fear constricts my throat and chokes my breath. I shouldn’t blame Gabriel for wanting me dead. It’s self-preservation. Plenty of powerful people are conspiring to slaughter him—replace the firstborn with his secondborn sister.

So, this is one of those books I forgot to write my review for back when I read it. Bad reviewer!! Bad!! And as I sit here trying to remember all that this story held while glancing through the book, I am reminded of the love I had for it and for the author.

Roselle is still the amazing, fierce girl I fell for back in SECONDBORN. Probably more so with everything that has transpired since that ending. Because there is so much that goes on in TRAITOR BORN: treachery, heartbreak, rebellion, lust. I still wonder how I almost passed this series by when I first tried to read it and couldn’t get into it. No excuse. I was dumb. Glad I came to my senses.

I also fell for a new guy in this book. Bartol is kind of awesome in her ability to have you falling in love with one guy, then has you running towards someone new in the next book. I am ok with that. The old guy usually does something stupid anyhow, which makes the blow not so bad. But that ending had me all kind of a mess. I really hope I get to love this guy throughout the next book, REBEL BORN. I really like him.

Until then, I will be sitting here impatiently waiting for REBEL BORN. 5 Stars!
