 Summertime for Blair Reynolds and her friends had always been carefree and fun... until the summer they happened upon something that was not human. 1.        Secrets- Can you keep a secret?  If not, do not read Cicada.  Everything in Blair Reynolds’ world is interwoven with secrets … things that will affect her very existence.

2.         Summer- “It was in the early summer when this story begins, when the cicadas leave their shells clinging to the bark of trees and stretch their wings.  It was that part of the summer when the sun sinks behind the horizon and the cicadas begin to sing.” 

3.         Duality- There’s a theme of doubles in Cicada.  There’s a sort of yin and yang, twins who cannot fully survive without one another, and other themes of duality threaded throughout Blair’s would.

4.         Aliens- Surprise!  Aliens have come to Texas!  And they aren’t riding a horse, either!  They are leaving crop circles and cocoons.  It’s what hatches out of that cocoon, which Blair and her friends discover, that is the key to everything.

5.         Love- There are many types of love in Cicada: familial love, friendship, loyalty, and romance.  Love is the sweetener in this story that softens the fire that ignites as the heat is turned up.

6.         Metamorphosis- Just as the cicada emerges from its shell as a new creature, so do Blair and her friends as the events of this turbulent story force them to adapt in order to survive.  As the summer comes to an end, the question remains … who is human and who is alien.
