It's not a huge surprise that this book was written to make
people laugh. But I do tackle an issue within the pages that meant a lot to me.
So I'd like to briefly explain why.
When I was a teen, I'd heard of Ambien parties, but refused
to believe people actually did this. And for those of you who don't know what
they are, it's basically a drug party, different forms float around, but the
one I encountered is similar to the one I bring up in the book. Taking pills
from a bowl, guessing what people are on, mixing prescriptions, etc. Scary.
When one of my friends showed up on my porch drugged out of her mind, crying
and paranoid and seriously not herself after one of these things, it broke my
heart and scared me into the reality of it. I couldn't ignore their existence anymore
and begged my friends not to attend any.
After I became a writer, I was at a doctor's appointment
with my sons, and I had an interesting conversation with my family physician
(who is hilarious, btw. It took me about twenty minutes to convince him I wrote
for teens and not erotica, lol.) He brought up how it would be great for
someone to write a funny and comedic book, but to bring up the scary social
issues teens deal with that people like to ignore. Or maybe that people don't
know about. And badda boom, he said, "Like have you heard about the Ambien
party crap people are into?"
I was in the middle of drafting Band Geek, and his thoughts
hit me so hard and the fact that I'd been pretty close to people in that
situation, I decided to tackle it. It was rough to write. I wanted this book to
be light, but after lots of thought and writing it out, I knew it had to be in
there. If only to protect just one person from doing this. Or make one person
aware of it. Or even just for me.
And that's why this book in particular means so much to me.
And I'm so happy I can share it with the world :)
Sierra Livingston’s got it bad for her sister’s best friend,

geek.

Cassie, you're such a wonderful writer! You did a fantastic job of tackling this issue in the midst of what is otherwise a light-hearted read. And hey, that's real! Many people are going along in their happy-go-lucky world when they hit something dark and scary.
