Summary from
Goodreads:
Nevaeh Evan’s life is uprooted after her father’s death, when she moves
in with her aunt and cousin, Livvie. Her plan to lay low at her new high school
isn’t working. Her friend’s jerky boyfriend keeps asking her out, the guy she
likes treats her like garbage, and the thought of tumbling again makes her want
to hurl.
So when her aunt pushes her into joining the elite X-FACTOR cheer leading
squad, Navaeh goes along with it.
But Nev feels she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Not after what happened the
night her father died.
Bodie Scott knows about grief all too well. Critically injured in an alcohol
related accident the year before, Bodie struggles with the fact that he’ll
never play football again, and he’s so far behind in credits he can’t see
straight. That is, until he meets Nev. Haunted by their bloody pasts and wary
of a shared future, Nev and Bodie turn to one another for comfort and support,
and realize they’re not so alone after all. And when the party scene at school
threatens the life of a loved one, the two stop at nothing to keep the past
from repeating itself.

Unbreakable

Release Date:

Summary from
Goodreads:
Perception is everything to sixteen-year-old
Olivia Brown. With her freakishly hot boyfriend, volunteer work at the local
animal shelter, successful beauty channel on YouTube, and well-earned spot on X
Factor Cheer's elite level five Diamond Girl team, Livvie's the girl every
other girl wants to be. At least, that's the illusion she's aiming for.
But Livvie's seemingly perfect life is anything but. Lying about the bruises
her boyfriend gives her, and cowering beneath his raging temper becomes a
regular way of life until she unwittingly witnesses her drunken neighbor
beating his step-son, the town bad boy, Reid Tate.
For Reid, vulnerability is the enemy. Opening up, and letting people in gives
them the power to disappoint. Growing up with a co-dependent mother and an
abusive alcoholic father, Reid has endured all the disappointment he can
stomach.
But when his pretty, do-good neighbor witnesses his step-dad beat him to within
an inch of his life, and not only call the cops, but keeps quiet at school
about what she saw, Reid wonders if maybe, just maybe, he's found someone he
can finally trust.

{Teaser from UNBREAKABLE}
The concealer I'd
packed on this morning to cover the bruising was holding up for the most part,
only a slight tinge of blue showing through. I tugged my favorite gloss out of
my bag and swiped a liberal coat across my lips before checking out my eyes. I'd
gone a little heavier with the eye shadow and liner that morning in hopes of
distracting from the problem that was my mouth. It seemed to be holding up
well, no creasing or smudging.
"Funny thing
about bruises … the more you get, the harder they are to cover up."
Reid sat in his
chair with one arm resting on the table, the other draped lazily in his lap,
his expression blank.
Had he spoken to
me? "What? What did you say?"
His jaw rippled,
but he made no move to look at me again. "It'll happen again. Each time
you forgive him, each time you take him back … it's like a signal, a tiny
subconscious declaration that you're okay with being mistreated. He'll hit you
again, and he'll start doing it more often. Get out now." He glanced at me
sideways for half a second, then back to the front of the room. "Before he
leaves a scar."
I sat glued to my
seat, shocked by his words. Reid thought J.P. had given me my bruises?
I leaned toward
him and tried to catch his gaze. "You've got it all wrong, Reid." I
touched my injured lips and frowned. "I got hurt at cheer last night. J.P.
loves me. He would never hurt me."
That last little
bit earned me an enormous eye roll and a frustrated sigh. "Yeah. Just like
he'd never scream at you and call you a whore in front of the entire student
body."
Nausea wormed its
way through my gut. He'd been there? Seen J.P. yell and embarrass me in front
of everyone? I wanted to crawl into a hole all over again.
I started to look
away when he leveled me with those eyes of his once more. The cool indifference
he mastered so well had faded into something altogether different— a haunted
look that froze me bone deep. "It starts with a struggle for control.
After that comes the yelling. He'll feel bad for bossing you around and losing
his temper, so he'll apologize and bring you flowers and a balloon."
My blood turned to
ice.
"A few days
will go by, and the urge to control you will start up again. He'll yell some
more, only this time, he'll put his hands on you. Squeeze you, or maybe shake
you. Leave a bruise."
I swallowed hard.
Why was my mouth so dry?
Reid's eyes
flared, the cool blue darkening, burning hot. "You'll convince yourself to
believe him when he tells you how sorry he is. How he'll never lose it with you
again. You'll even start to believe it's your fault the next time he loses it
with you and hits you. After all, he wouldn't be so upset if you hadn't given
him a reason, right?"
