Interview: Sarah M. Ross, Author of NEVER GONNA TELL #UtopYA

*What would you be doing right now if you were not an author?
I was a middle school English teacher, so I’m sure I’d still be teaching.

*5 years ago: what were you doing?
Five years ago I was beginning my writing career. I had just moved to Florida and since it was the middle of the school year, I couldn’t teach right away. So I started working on a book!

*Do you have a certain writing ritual?
I need to have absolute quiet. I need to concentrate on what my characters are telling me, so I make sure I either have my white noise app or a quiet house—and coffee! I must have coffee when I write no matter the time of day.

*What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?
I had a WIP I wrote one time that I was super proud of. My critique partner loved it and I was just so happy with it. Until I passed it off to an editor who tore it to shreds. There was so much red ink it looked like a crime scene. It broke my heart that she hated – hated—what I wrote. It was my first time really being ripped apart like that and in the long run it thickened my skin .

*Is there an author you'd like to meet?
Hands down—JK Rowling. (I mean, who doesn’t want to meet her?!)

*Biggest writing pet peeve?
It drives me absolutely batty when I’m chugging along, writing up a storm, and then one character decides to go mute for the next week. Just—nothing. Nada. Lips sealed. And I’m all like “But I need to know what happens next! Talk to me, damnit!”

* Do you read other's reviews of your books?
I do. I know I shouldn’t, but I do. I’m a glutton for punishment.

Fav Color:
Uh…. The rainbow? No, seriously. I don’t have just one. If I had to pick one color I liked to wear the best it would be coral. It flatters my skin tone.

Fictional Character you'd like to spend the day with?
Hermione Granger

Fav food
Gnocchi with pink sauce

Fav song and/or singer
I know this will make people scratch their heads, but I’m not a big music person. I listen to whatever’s on the radio. If I had to pick, I’d say Ed Sheeran.

Guilty pleasure
The Tonight Dough ice cream, getting 90 minute massages, salted caramel anything, 19 Kids and Counting (cause I seriously want to know how she manages all those kids! I’m exhausted with one!), re-reading Twilight, and adding things to my Amazon wish list even though I know I’ll never buy them.

Sarah started her obsession with reading at an early age, often sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class. She would read any book she could get her hands on. Her love of reading quickly evolved into a love of writing and stories began to pour out of her.

She grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as she does for several years. Sarah will always be a proud member of the Steelers' Nation, but couldn't take the cold and moved her frozen tush to Florida where she now lives with her family and two cats. You will find her now with her trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!

My name is Reagan Wilcox: high school senior by day, kick-ass investigative journalist by night. I’ve always loved observing people—especially when they think no one is paying attention.
I thought I was ready to cover any story. Work any angle.
Nothing could have prepared me for what happened that night. I wasn’t ready for what I saw. And I certainly wasn’t ready for him.
I always knew I’d write the headlines. Now, I just might become one.
