Review: Eden's Root by Rachel Fisher

Title: Eden's Root

Author: Rachel Fisher

goodreads...
The year is 2033 and the world hovers on the edge of explosion as unexplained crop deaths lead to severe global food shortages. In the United States, the Sickness is taking lives slowly, creeping its way into every family. Fi Kelly has already faced the Sickness in her own family, toughening her beyond her years. But a shocking confession from her dying father will push her toughness to its absolute limits. Saddled with an impossible secret and the mission of saving her little sister, Fi sets out to transform herself into the warrior that she must become to survive the coming collapse. Along the way, she will discover that evil can be accidental and that love can be intentional.

My take...
I liked this story and then there were some parts I wasn't crazy about...so I am going break down my review in 3 parts. Starting with the first 100 pages…I was so intrigued with the story line. I loved hearing about how the world had slowly been killing itself due to the food it was creating and consuming. What's weird is this fiction is hovering freakishly close to real life. It's a scary thing. But hearing how it all started and how it all went wrong was plain creepy, yet cool. My hubs has told me I have a very unhealthy appetite for apocalyptic stories. Am I one of those Doomsday Preppers? Nope. But I would like to think I could hold my own for a bit if something were to happen.

Ok, next part is the middle 100 pages. With this section of the book, I found a little boring. This is the part where the Family were either traveling or holding up in an old farm house for the winter. Just not a lot happened here and I also realized I didn't relate much to Fi, the Family's Leader. Here is a 14 yr old girl telling grown adults what to do. And the adults were all like 'Whatever you say'...well in so many words. I just don't think I would like a 14yr old girl telling me what to do…experience or not. I will say that Fi is sort of like a young fierce Katniss. But not much happens in this time frame during the story so sometimes I would skip over some paragraphs just to get to the next scene. I found there was a lot of unnecessary detail in this part…and I am not fond of a lot of detail woven into books.

The last 100 pages is where it picked up again and in such a good way. Fi is now 15 and I found myself actually enjoying her character a little more, especially when she is introduced to a new character. He is not really new to the readers because he has had a few scenes throughout the book where we got his POV. But things start happening between them and with the Family. It gets pretty exciting for them and a lot happens. Plus the romance was very cute and I loved those moments. I am a pushover for good romance scene.

So there you have it. I recommend Eden’s Root to anyone who enjoys a good apocalyptic style read with a little time on your hands. Eden’s Root is a rather long read…at least for my taste it was.

Review: Love and Skate by Lila Felix

Title: Love and Skate

Author: Lila Felix

Source: ebook from author for review

goodreads...
On the rink she’s tough, she’s a leader, she’s fast and she’s the epitome of a rebellious girl. But Nellie’s been hurt, only once, but it was enough to make her look at life through different eyes and off the rink she’s a timid girl who loves with no pretenses.
A long time ago Owen Black was betrayed by the girl he thought he loved and the guy he called his best friend. The anguish set off a domino effect of negativity in his life and he never has fully recovered. He meets Nellie Forrester and thinks he can let it go for her.
But how can you love someone when the wounds from your past are still wide open?

My take...
Both Owen and Nellie have been hurt by someone they cared very deeply for.  And each carry the hurt still years later. But getting past that hurt will be harder on one more than the other. Dive in and see a beautiful relationship tested over a short time. Dive in and see if true love really does conquer all. Dive in and fall head over heels in love with these amazing characters Felix has brought to life.

If I am ever granted 3 magical wishes in my life...I know that one of them will be to have more time so I can reread certain books. Ever since I started blogging and reviewing finding that time is but a far off dream. But if I do...Love and Skate is definitely the top book I will want to reread.

Lately I have been finding myself wanting to read contemporary fiction more and more, a genre that I really never cared for until recently. Love and Skate is a perfect example of why I want to read more of it. Felix is not afraid to send her beloved characters through the ringer before they find their happiness.

I have said it before, that Felix knows what the reader wants when it comes to romance and she delivers it with perfect execution in her books. If given the time I could go on and on about how much I adore the romance that flows perfectly through the story. With each book, her writing and storytelling has gotten better and better. And with each book I am more in awe of her as an author.

The relationship between Owen and Nellie is charming and so unbelievably cute. Felix really did a great job giving the readers some awesome characters that become like a 2nd family to you. Felix is kinda fabulous in that regard. How does she do it? What is her secret? I don’t know…but she better never stop.

Go read Love and Skate. Then try to tell me you didn't love it. Cause I will promise you...you are gonna love it!

Fav scene..
I put my arm under her head and grabbed the back of her thigh to move her even closer as gently as possible. Just hours ago I would’ve given anything to have my hand on her thigh but this was not sexy. This was making sure that if she was cold, I would warm her. If she was in pain, I would ease her. And if her heart ached, I would mend her. Somehow the things that I could do for her were just the things that she needed. She could’ve found them anywhere but she chose to seek them in me.

SEE! Swoony romance! Owen= sexiness!

The Wild Ones Tour {Review & Give@way}

Title:The Wild Ones

Author: M. Leighton

Source: ebook from author for review

goodreads...
**MATURE CONTENT ADVISORY: May not be suitable for younger readers**

Passion as hot as midnight in the South and love as wild as the horses they tame.

Camille “Cami” Hines is the darling daughter of the South’s champion thoroughbred breeder, Jack Hines. She has a pedigree that rivals some of her father’s best horses. Other than feeling a little suffocated at times, Cami thought she was pretty happy with her boyfriend, her life and her future.

But that was before she met Patrick Henley.

“Trick” blurs the lines between what Cami wants and what is expected of her. He’s considered the “help,” which is forbidden fruit as far as her father is concerned, not to mention that Trick would be fired if he ever laid a hand on her. And Trick needs his job. Desperately. His family depends on him.

The heart wants what the heart wants, though, and Trick and Cami are drawn to each other despite the obstacles. At least the ones they know of.

When Trick stumbles upon a note from his father, it triggers a series of revelations that could ruin what he and Cami have worked so hard to overcome. It turns out there’s more to Trick’s presence at the ranch than either of them knew, secrets that could tear them apart.

My take...
Holy Mother of Mercy! This book...this wonderful book had me hook, line, and sinker.

Hook: wonderful, amazing, fun characters

Line: flippin' fabulous story line that devoured me

Sinker: the ending was sweet & powerful & tearful

I am so in love with Trick and Cami. I mean they are freakin' adorable together...so, so perfect for each other. How do you do it Leighton? How can you write these characters (some with quirky names...yes Trick, Nash, and Cash I am talking about you guys) and have us falling all over ourselves to get to know them better? You give us these guys that we want to sink our teeth into and never let go. Love, love, love them.

I loved the whole story line and setting. It was so much fun reading this book and picturing it my mind. Leighton describes it all as if I am watching it unfold before me on a tv screen. And let me tell you... picturing Trick shirtless...on a horse...in the summer heat....it's a beautiful thing. A beautiful, dirty thing. I was so surprised once again with the revelation Leighton laid out for us readers. I truly had other ideas on what the big deal would be and was so happy it wasn't what I thought. *whew*

Now that ending, that beautiful ending. So happy with how it all went down. Picture this...me standing in my kitchen...making waffles...tears in my eyes. Cause that is what happened. I was so absorbed in the book I didn't want to put it down. The story demanded my attention at the end and I willingly gave it. Only one problem I had with it...I missed Trick and Cami the second I read The Happily-Ever-After End.

Do I recommend you read The Wild Ones? Abso-freakin-lutely! This story is a must read that you will thank me later for recommending it. So in advance....You are welcome!

Swell Blog Tour {Top10 with Author Julie Rieman Duck}

Born in Los Angeles and raised in San Clemente, California, Julie Rieman Duck wrote her way through school on an old-fashioned typewriter. Somewhere along the line, she was sidetracked by careers in magazine publishing and copywriting. While Julie honed her skills at writing print ads and articles, the stories that moved her heart and soul were bubbling underneath, waiting to escape.
It took a medical scare and the loss of her job — on the same day and within 30 minutes of each other — to finally allow her stories to free themselves and be put to paper.
Julie looks forward to writing more stories that hit where the heart beats fastest, and the soul reaches out for more.

1. fav movie/actor/actress?

Modern - Christian Bale and Julie Roberts   Back in the Day - Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant

2. fav song/singer?
Dust in the Wind (by an OLD band called Kansas). I must admit I love Madonna (I'm old enough to remember when she started).
